In short

Joining Black Book of Sex, building a profile and browsing are free. Reading and replying to messages need a paid membership, and the members area shows the exact price and currency of each plan before you pay. Every plan, trials included, renews automatically until you cancel in Settings > Billing.

What the free account does

A free account lets you join, build a profile, add photos and browse other members without paying. Free accounts see ads. It's enough to judge whether there are people you'd like to talk to before you spend anything, which is exactly what it's for. How Black Book of Sex works walks through each step.

What a membership adds

A membership opens the conversation: reading messages and replying, read receipts, seeing who has viewed you, likes, and viewing photos in full. Members of partner sites in the same network can message you too, so a membership covers conversations with them as well.

Extras you don't need

The members area also sells optional add-ons. None of them is needed to use the site. The ones we've seen are:

  • profile boosts;
  • priority messages;
  • a 24-hour pass;
  • revealing who has liked you;
  • an ID-verified badge, showing you passed an ID-and-selfie check by LEM Verify.

Check what each one does, what it costs and whether it's a one-off before you pay. Buy one only when you know what problem it solves.

How not to pay for a month you didn't mean to

Every membership renews automatically at the end of each period, and an introductory trial rolls into a full plan. The US Federal Trade Commission's advice on trials and auto-renewals works anywhere: know the cancellation terms before you sign up, and mark the deadline. In practice:

  1. At checkout, note the price, currency, plan length and the billing name shown.
  2. The same day, put the renewal date in your diary, with a reminder a couple of days before.
  3. Before that date, decide. To stop, go to Settings > Billing and cancel.
  4. After it, check your statement to confirm what was or wasn't taken.

Cancel or delete: which do you need?

They're separate jobs, and doing one doesn't do the other.

Currency and the billing name

The plans we've seen are priced in US dollars. If your card is in pounds or Australian dollars, your bank converts the amount and may charge a fee on top. The members area shows the billing name at checkout: that's the line to look for on your statement, and you'll see it again at each renewal. Our guide to keeping casual dating private has more on statements and shared accounts.

Refunds and disputes

Refunds are dealt with in the members-area terms, which are governed by Delaware law and include an arbitration clause. Billing questions go through the members help centre, linked from our contact page. If you're still deciding, is Black Book of Sex legit? sets out what the terms say.

Questions people ask

Does a trial renew?

Yes. Any introductory trial rolls into a full membership automatically unless you cancel in Settings > Billing before it ends. The simplest protection is to put the end date in your diary the moment you buy, with a reminder a day or two before, and decide then whether you want to carry on.

Will I be charged in pounds?

The plans we've seen are priced in US dollars, and we haven't confirmed whether UK members are offered pounds. The members area shows the price and currency before you pay. If it isn't your own currency, your bank converts it and may add a non-sterling transaction fee, which can appear as a separate line on your statement.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are covered by the members-area terms, which are governed by Delaware law and include an arbitration clause. Read that section before you buy, not after. If a payment was taken that you didn't authorise, call your card issuer straight away, and raise any other billing question through the members help centre.

Do I need the extras?

No. Boosts, priority messages, a 24-hour pass, revealing who has liked you and the ID-verified badge are all optional. A membership is what lets you read and reply to messages. Buy an extra only when you know what it's for, and check before paying whether it's a one-off payment or something that renews.

What will my bank statement say?

Look for the billing name shown at checkout: that's the line to expect, and it repeats at every renewal. We don't print a specific name here because we couldn't confirm which appears on every card statement. If you share an account or a banking app, the other person will see the payment too.
